Enhancing Server Room Security at a Datacentre

Introduction

A high-security datacentre needed to strengthen protection inside its server room.

The outer perimeter already had strong security measures in place. The next priority was to protect the server racks where sensitive data and business-critical applications were hosted.

The aim was to stop unauthorised access to restricted rack areas, support faster incident verification and keep essential maintenance work running without weakening security.

The Problem

Traditional measures such as locked cabinets and CCTV monitoring gave the operator a degree of control, but they lacked precision and flexibility.

If authorised personnel entered areas beyond their clearance, the system relied too much on manual monitoring. This created a gap between detection, verification and response.

The datacentre needed a more accurate internal detection layer. It had to protect specific racks and rows, integrate with CCTV and allow security zones to be adjusted during approved maintenance work.

The Solution

The security team installed multiple OPTEX REDSCAN Mini Pro RLS-2020V LiDAR sensors inside the server room.

Each sensor created accurate virtual walls around selected rows of server racks. This added a precise detection layer around the most sensitive areas of the room, while complementing the physical barriers already in place.

The REDSCAN Mini Pro sensors were integrated with the facility’s existing CCTV system. When a sensor detected movement inside a protected zone, the nearest camera automatically focused on the relevant rack area. This gave security personnel fast visual verification and helped them respond with greater confidence.

The system also gave security managers the flexibility to define detection zones around specific racks or rows. These zones were temporarily lifted when authorised engineers needed access for maintenance or upgrades. Once work was complete, the zones were reactivated instantly.

Conclusion

The installation improved internal security across the datacentre’s most sensitive space.

Virtual walls gave the operator a more precise way to protect server racks, while CCTV integration helped the security team verify incidents in real time. Custom detection zones also supported daily operations by allowing approved maintenance without leaving key areas exposed.

By using multiple REDSCAN Mini Pro RLS-2020V sensors, the datacentre added accuracy, flexibility and rapid verification to its internal security strategy. The result was stronger protection for the heart of the facility, without disrupting essential work.
